The Boater’s Note

Built by Ishikawajima (now Ishikawajima Heavy Industries Co), Japan’s first and foremost modern shipyard (est. 1853), Western Isles was launched as R/V Shumpu Maru in 1974. Commissioned as an Oceanographic and Meteorological research vessel, she sailed the North West Pacific for over 26 years, before being decommissioned in 2001. Three years and a sizeable refit later, which included a brand new aluminium superstructure, multiple guest cabins and a superlative flybridge, she was relauched as an explorer yacht in 2004. With 6 en suite guest cabins, multiple entertainment spaces, indoors and outdoors, and 8,000 nautical miles autonomy, Western Isles is waiting for its next adventure.

The Owner’s notes

“Originally built in Sydney in 1972, this magnificent and purposeful steel yacht has travelled the oceans and seen the world. She has been registered in Australia, the United Kingdom the United States and currently in Hong Kong. She is a true eye catcher and always gets noticed on the dock.

In 2006, Mischief completed a painstaking two-year renovation. The hull was completely stripped down and sand blasted inside and out and anything less than 5 mm steel thickness cut out and re-placed with compatible Corten steel. At the same time, she underwent other modifications including a new interior, mechanical and electrical systems, new mast, rigging, winches, etc. (Photos of the restoration are available on request). In 2020, further upgrades were made to her including replacing all the portholes and painting various areas. She has been antifouled regularly, with the last haul-out being in 2023.

Mischief is very easy and comfortable to sail despite her size and will provide 6 to 7 knots in everything from 10 knots to 30 knots of wind. She will also plough through a force 8 gale at 7 knots with her fantastically reliable and oversized 135HP Isuzu engine, which has full walk-in access within its sound insulated engine room

This vessel is ideal for bluewater sailing, and in the last 24 months she has been kitted out for this purpose with the very latest digital navigational and communication systems and safety equipment. Alternatively, she would make a very comfortable and low maintenance liveaboard with plenty of room both inside and on deck. She is spaciously laid out with two double cabins fore and aft, both with en-suite heads. She has a roomy open galley and saloon with good storage. Her cockpit has part solid, part removable dodgers and aft offers very comfortable bench seating, which is integrated into the davit system.

We purchased Mischief in 2019 with the intention of sailing her to the Philippines. However, owing to a change of circumstances we are relocating to Europe and consider it only practical to sell her. Surveyed in 2019 with a HKD1 million valuation, our asking price is extremely reasonable. In fact, it’s almost a steal. It reflects that a new owner will need to give Mischief some loving attention and antifoul her, but overall she is a solid, reliable yacht that will offer many years of further enjoyment.

Mischief is currently located in Tso Wo Hang, Sai Kung on a private mooring.
